CWN – May 16, 2012

An admitted Italian gangster has said that the 15-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee was killed in 1983 because a criminal gang was irate over the loss of funds deposited in the Vatican bank.

In an interview with the daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, Antonio Mancini, a former member of the Magliana gang, said that young Emanuela Orlandi was kidnapped after Mafia figures learned that they had lost ?more than 200 million dollars? that they had sought to launder through the Vatican bank. Depositors took huge losses because of the collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano, with which the Vatican bank had extensive ties.

?There was a problem with money not being returned, and the choice was between leaving some cardinal?s body by the side of the road or hitting someone close to the Pope,? said Mancini. He added that Enrico De Pedis, a noted crime figure in Rome, drove the car that was used in the abduction of Emanuela Orlandi.

Although Mancini?s credibility is not great, his interview gained attention in Rome because police investigators there have recently exhumed the body of Enrico De Pedis, searching for clues that might help to solve the mystery of Emanuela Orlandi?s disappearance. Several organized-crime figures have said that De Pedis was involved in the girl?s disappearance.

Northwestern?s Political Union took a step away from its usual public affairs topics Monday to host NU head football coach Pat Fitzgerald for a discussion of the resolution that the NCAA should pay student-athletes.

Fitzgerald debated with about 25 students at Scott Hall, arguing in favor of the resolution. He said he has not embraced a particular proposal for paying student-athletes but generally supports the idea.

?I?m in favor of supporting athletes financially,? he said. ?(Football) is as strong as it?s ever been and is watched as much as it?s ever been because of the student-athletes. To minimize the impact of the student-athlete would be very unfair.?

The discussion of ?pay-for-play? is one that has heated up around college athletics in recent years, as new television contracts bring in billions of dollars for the NCAA and its associate universities. In 2010, the NCAA signed a 14-year, $10.8 billion contract with CBS and Turner for TV rights to the men?s basketball tournament.

Proponents of ?pay-for-play? argue some of this new revenue should go to athletes. ?

?This wasn?t talked about in the mid-?90s when I was playing, when there was two football games on TV on a Saturday,? Fitzgerald said.

Additionally, a number of violations for improper benefits given to student-athletes have cast a spotlight on the fact that some top-level athletes, especially in football and basketball, are receiving compensation already. Fitzgerald spoke out against athletes accepting improper benefits but says sometimes student-athletes will accept these benefits if they feel the need to help support their families.

?Any impropriety and lack of integrity for personal gain isn?t something that should be in sports,? he said. ?If you?ve got those kinds of financial difficulties at home, there has to be a mechanism to help that student-athlete. When your back?s against the wall and you have to help your family, what are you going to do? You?re going to help.?

Proposals have varied on whether student-athletes should be compensated, and, if they are, what the plan should look like. The NCAA has considered a blanket $2,000 yearly stipend for all athletes. Fitzgerald argued against the stipend, saying it would simply be spending money for his financially sound players and would not be enough for those struggling to make ends meet.

Instead, Fitzgerald proposed a system in which money is distributed based on need, similar to the way many universities already handle financial aid, saying that could help curb instances in which an athlete feels pressured to accept improper benefits because of external factors.

Other students in attendance expressed different perspectives on the issue. Communication senior Kian Hudson spoke in favor of allowing athletes to pursue their own endorsements, which would keep the NCAA?s current revenue streams in place and create new ones for athletes.

?When it comes to the general public?s vision of NCAA athletes, they tend to focus on the stars, the guys who can play in the pros,? Hudson said. ?I think a lot of the problems that people have dealing with the great stars getting exploited would be alleviated a little bit if those guys could go out and sell used cars. The schools are making money off of those kids? names and faces, and I don?t see why these young men can?t make money off of their names and faces.?

Weinberg senior Nick Ruge, the co-president of the Political Union, said the group invited Fitzgerald to speak because it values the opportunity to go beyond just political issues.

?We try to get a holistic, diverse perspective on a lot of very important issues,? Ruge said. ?Fitz is a huge part of this school, and he gives a lot back to the school. He?s an expert on leadership and integrity and he really defines those traits, so it was fun to be able to be in a position to hear from him and learn from him.?

Australia is much like its Pacific neighbors in numerous ways. But in terms of the best diving resorts, Australia has it all with all the best reefs as well as the clearest waters. Diving in Australia, no matter whether scuba diving, skin diving, or shark diving can help you open your eyes to the distinct marine environments we?ve got right now.

Double Island

A single of Australia?s far more well-known diving resorts may be the Double Island in Queensland. This exclusive location is modest when compared with other industrial sites but it provides divers in Australia the space and also the seclusion to enjoy their scuba diving expeditions. Lying amongst the two islands is a shallow shelf of reefs and atolls in which a single can view the fishes along with the corals in emerald-green waters. Double Island is really a resort that gives tourist a paradise inside a paradise.

Hayman Wonderful Barrier Reef

Retail sales rose at the lowest rate of the year, with analysts speculating that Easter sales and mild March weather pulled customers into stores earlier, reports Bloomberg.

The .1 percent gain in April followed a .7 percent increase in March. Categories like building materials, clothing and department stores dropped last month, and slow employment growth also had an impact on April sales.

After 20 years with PBS, Gras has started her own producation company. Photo by: Anisworth Duvernay

The Venture spent some time with Patricia Gras, a true inspiration to Latinas. Gras is a TV host and producer of Living Smart with Patricia Gras at Houston PBS and although she is no longer a staff member with PBS, the show will continue airing this year.

She now owns her own independent production company. Patricia has also won multiple Emmys and is a cancer surivor.

Felipe Campos: For those who don?t know, what is Living Smart?

Patricia Gras: ?It?s a show about life skills such as finances, health issues, spirituality and well-being. Living Smart is shown nationally on over 200 channels. Really, it?s a show about getting the most of life.?

FC: Patricia, tell us about winning an Emmy, how did you feel about that?

PG: To me, winning six Emmys means a lot to the television industry. I have won them with a team of great professionals for the documentaries I did over Romania, AIDS and civil rights issues. We have also won another 170 broadcasting awards in addition to that, but I enjoy the work more than the awards themselves, although I am very thankful for them.

Gras has been with Houston Public Broadcasting System- Houston?s Channel 8 for twenty-two years. She started September 1990 as a contract hire, but in November 1991 she became full staff. Gras is no longer with PBS.

PG: ?I still believe in the PBS mission to educate and inform; a network of values and truth.?

FC: What have been some of your contributions as a humanitarian?

PG: Always participate in the community to achieve better race relations and to empower women in the workplace. I have worked with environmental groups, received an award from the African American Chamber of Commerce, Interfaith Ministries and every ethnic group in the community. Although, I was born in the United States, my parents and grandparents were from other parts of the world so I see myself as a universal, multiethnic person. My company, Gras Productions, is about reconnecting the world, because I believe we truly are interconnected.

FC: Mrs. Gras, how is the entertainment business different than other industries?

PG: Entertainment is a creative business, but a fast-moving business. TV is exciting but very competitive and ego driven. With that comes lots of envy, talented people tend to lose themselves because they are not grounded. Take a look at Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, both very talented who reached the pinnacle of success but also really fell hard. I call that being in ?Una Montan~a Rusa? (a roller coaster ride).?

FC: You are a spiritual person, correct? What has been your spiritual journey throughout your life and career?

PG: I?ve always felt a connection to a higher divine power. I was raised Catholic but don?t consider myself religious. I am more spiritual. I believe in a higher power, divine love and a path to higher consciousness. It is something that has helped me deal with the entertainment world.

FC: As a role model, what advice do you have for Latinas in the entertainment industry?

PG: To my Latinas in the entertainment industry or anywhere, keep your priorities straight and understand relationships with yourself and others. Take steps to achieve goals, not just educated goals, but emotional, psychological and spiritual ones. Drugs and alcohol will only help you lose yourself. Have good manners, something crucial in life. Years back people were more family-oriented and valued the importance of manners which builds respect. To succeed, work harder, be more dedicated, and never lose opportunities to be the best you can be.

May 14   Samsung SCX-4835FR

Posted by

The Samsung SCX-4835FR ($450 street) is the sort of unexciting monochrome laser MFP that does its job well enough, but without offering anything to make it stand out from the crowd. Like some other Samsung MFPs I’ve reviewed recently, including, for example, the Samsung SCX-4729FD ($250 street, 3 stars), it’s slower than you’d expect from the engine rating, which is 33 pages per minute (ppm) in this case. However, it offers all the features most offices need. As long as you’re not overly concerned with speed, that’s enough to make it worth considering.

Aimed at the range from micro to mid-size offices, but most appropriate for micro to small offices or workgroups because of its slow speed, the SCX-4835FR ?is too big to share a desk with comfortably, at 17.6 by 18.5 by 17.2 (HWD) inches. On the other hand, it’s small enough to find room for easily even in a micro office, and its Ethernet connection makes it easy to share on a network.

As you would probably expect for an office MFP, the SCX-4835FR can print and fax from, as well as scan to a PC, even over a network, and it works as a standalone copier and fax machine. In addition, it can both scan to and print from a USB memory key, and it includes a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to complement the letter size flatbed, and let you scan legal-size pages. The ADF also duplexes (scans one side of the page, then turns it over to scan the other) making it easy to scan stacks of paper printed on both sides of the page.

The printer’s paper handling is good enough to count as a plus, with a 250-sheet paper tray, a 50-sheet multipurpose tray for easy printing on different types of paper, and a built-in duplexer for printing on both sides of the page. For most micro and small offices this should translate to both ample capacity and welcome flexibility. For those who need more, Samsung sells an optional 520-sheet tray ($200 street) to boost the paper capacity to a total of 820 sheets.

Setup and Speed
For my tests, I installed the SCX-4835FR driver and software on a Windows Vista system, and connected the printer directly to the network. Installation was standard fare.

The printer was a lot slower than you’d expect from the 33 ppm engine speed?which should be close to the speed you’ll see when printing a text file without any graphics or photos. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic’s hardware and software for timing) at an effective 3.3 ppm.

For comparison, the SCX-4729FD , rated at 29 ppm, came in at 8.2 ppm, and the Editors’ Choice Brother MFC-8480DN ($400 street, 4 stars), rated at 32 ppm, managed an effective 10.6 ppm. That makes the SCX-4835FR slow for the price and slow for the engine rating.

Output Quality
I wish I could report that the printer makes up for its slow speed with dazzling output quality. Unfortunately, however, the quality is a bit below par across the board. The good news is that even below-par text for a mono laser is more than good enough for most business needs. It’s not suitable for serious desktop publishing, but for anything less demanding than that, you shouldn’t have a problem with it unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics and photo quality are both at the bottom of a tight range where the vast majority of mono laser MFPs fall. Graphics are easily good enough for any internal business need. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you may or may not consider them good enough for PowerPoint handouts or other material going to potential clients or customers. Photo quality is good enough to print recognizable photos from Web pages or the like. Whether you?d consider them suitable for, say, a client newsletter, will depend on how critical an eye you have.

All told, the Samsung SCX-4835FR offers the right set of features for most small offices, including such conveniences as the ADF and the ability to scan to and print from a USB key. It’s slow, but not intolerably slow, and although the output quality isn’t stellar, it’s good enough for most business use. The only real issue is that it costs a lot for what it delivers. The Brother MFC-8480DN , or even Samsung’s own SCX-4729FD offer better value?aka more bang per buck. But if you don’t mind the price, or can find the Samsung SCX-4835FR for a sufficiently low price, it’s otherwise a perfectly reasonably choice.

May 13   Jawbone Big Jambox

Posted by

Last year, headset vet Jawbone stepped into the wireless speaker market with the Jambox ($199.99, 3.5 stars), a portable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a speakerphone accessory. Now, the company is taking the idea and making it bigger with the Big Jambox ($299.99 direct), a larger, heavier, and more-powerful speaker. For $100 more, it bumps the Jambox up from a good portable personal speaker to one that could easily drive a small party or handle a conference call for a large group. The sound quality isn’t quite as clear and robust as what you get with the Editors’ Choice Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars), but a long battery life and a handy speakerphone feature make the Big Jambox a top choice if you’re looking for a wireless speaker to take with you.

Design
Like the Jambox before it, the Big Jambox is a blocky brick of a speaker. It measures 3.6 by 10.1 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.2 pounds, dwarfing the Jambox ‘s 6.0 by 2.2 by 1.6 inches and 12 ounces. (In the photo below, the original Jambox is on the left.) Available in red, black, or white, the speaker is surrounded by a metal grille, and slightly rubberized panels on the left and right sides help protect it in transit. It features most of its controls on its top side, including Playback and Volume buttons along with a Jawbone button for accessing various smart features including voice dialing and battery status. The right side holds a Power button and button for Bluetooth pairing, plus a 3.5mm output, microUSB port, and a power plug connector.

Pairing a smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth device with the Big Jambox is simple. When you first turn on the speaker it will automatically enter pairing mode, and after you’ve paired it with one device you can pair it with additional devices by holding the pairing button. You can also connect an audio device directly to the Big Jambox through the 3.5mm input with the included cable. The microUSB port is solely for updating the Big Jambox’s software, since unlike the Jambox, which charged via USB, it has a dedicated power jack and AC adapter. As a Bluetooth device, the range of the speaker is about 30 feet. According to Jawbone, the Big Jambox can last up to 15 hours on a single charge, much longer than, say, the Bose SoundLink, which is rated to last eight hours at moderate listening levels. I ran all of my tests on the Big Jambox, and after three days it still said the battery is “about full.” It actually said that. Pressing the Jambox button summons a female robotic voice that can tell you battery status.

Jawbone Big Jambox

Performance
The Big Jambox sounds clear, and its larger size and more power lets it get much louder than the Jambox. I filled the 5,000-square-foot PC Lab with music by cranking the volume to max, and while my fellow editors preferred “Bye Bye Birdie” to Glenn Benton, most everyone heard both the show tunes and death metal. Vocals and strings sounded crisp but slightly bright, and midrange notes were full and accurate.

Our bass test track, The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” sounded deep and forceful. The low end sounded slightly crunchy, and other bass-heavy songs like the Beastie Boys’ “Shake Your Rump” distorted slightly when the volume was turned up to maximum level. The Big Jambox is still a portable speaker, though, so don’t expect driving sound to rock a room. It can deliver music to a small party, but it won’t compete with a larger iPod dock or a full sound system.

In my test calls with an Apple iPhone 4S, voice call quality was clear, and the 360-degree microphone and larger size of the Big Jambox make it great for conference calls. Voices are picked up by the speaker easily at normal levels, and callers can be heard very loudly with the volume turned up.?

The Jawbone Big Jambox doesn’t quite deliver the power and clarity of our Editors’ Choice wireless portable speaker, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker, and it’s three times more expensive than some other wireless options like the Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars), but it works well as a speakerphone and boasts a long battery life, which is key for a portable speaker. The Beats By Dre Beatbox Portable ($449.95, 3.5 stars) offers stronger audio quality given its larger size, but it requires six D-cell batteries to be portable. If you value flexibility over audiophile-grade sound quality, the Big Jambox should be at the top of your list.
